All Scriptures are quoted from Young’s Literal Translation
“Sing ye to Him – sing praise to Him,
Meditate ye on all His wonders.
Boast yourselves in His Holy Name,
The heart of those seeking Jehovah rejoiceth”
Although the year of 2012 has ended, I would like to share with you one of the blessings I have received recently from God.
Somewhere around the end of November, I had a dream that my uncle had left me gifts. It was a materialistic dream because I saw a multitude of expensive gifts. One very particular gift was a shiny iPod touch. It was one of the newer generations, but I didn’t know what kind it was since I didn’t know much about Apple products.
When I woke up, I went to school and did my normal routine. I didn’t think much about the dream because I thought it was just a regular dream, but I had told one of my school friends about it. Then, when my dad picked me up from school, he told me that my cousin from the uncle that I dreamed about had bought me an iPod touch as a gift. When we got home, my mom directed me to the email my cousin sent. I read that he had indeed bought me the iPod touch. He also bought a RC helicopter for my brother. Jay has liked air crafts since he was little. He would always make airplanes and helicopters out of legos very often. It was good timing too since it was only a few days before my brother’s birthday. My cousin didn’t even know about it!
I then texted my friend from school about the news. I had told her about the dream earlier at school because it just came in to mind, so when I informed her about the email, she reminded me of the dream, and I was even more amazed! Another strange thing was that my family doesn’t get in touch with my cousin often. It was mostly when my cousin needed help on his website, and that was a long time ago. To get his email suddenly was a bit surprising since we had not talked to him in a while.
So, what does this mean for me? Well, I got an iPod Touch, 4th generation, which is pretty cool! However, it also means that God has let me know that He always thinks about me. A couple of weeks before, my music teacher asked me if I had an iPod. I told him I didn’t have one. He asked me because he wanted to suggest listening to music as I go out for contests. It’s a strategy to remove outside distractions as I practice in a roomful of people. I thought it would be nice, but it was soon put out of my mind, because my family financial condition would not let us to spend money on things like that. Consider this scripture:
“And delight thyself on Jehovah, And He giveth to thee the petitions of thy heart” (Psalm 37:4).
I believe that the dream was not a coincidence. The iPod touch series is very popular, and did I mention expensive? It’s one of the coolest, must-have gadgets the average American teenager has to have! So, yes, I thought it would be pretty cool to have one, but I never really had a burning want to actually have one. Most people out there would work very hard to earn money to buy the newest technology. But, think about this: If God wanted to give you something, and gave it to you that means you wouldn’t have to work too hard to get it. God is rich and the world belongs to Him!
“Mine is the silver, and Mine the gold, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts” (Haggai 2:8).
That’s not to say working hard to earn what you want is not okay, but if you instead work hard to seek the Word of God and make God’s priorities yours as well, then He will give you what you need:
“But seek ye first the reign of God and His righteousness, and all these shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).
You shouldn’t chase after and love the world. Our priority is what we need, not what we want. What we need is God’s Word because God said:
“It hath been written: Not upon bread alone doth man live, but upon every Word coming forth from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4).
“Love not ye the world, nor the things in the world; if any one doth love the world, the love of the Father is not in Him” (I John 2:15).
Don’t think you can just pray really hard and God will give it to you. You have to do more for God. You have to live and obey God’s Word and live a holy life:
“And it came to pass, in His saying these things, a certain woman having lifted up the voice out of the multitude, said to Him, `Happy the womb that carried thee, and the paps that thou didst suck!’ And He said, `Yea, rather, happy those hearing the Word of God, and keeping it’” (Luke 11:27-28)!
You also have to believe that the blessings that you receive come from God, not man alone. It is also important to thank God so that we let God know that we have not forgotten about Him:
“And my God shall supply all your need, according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Phillip 4:19).
My brother and I have received gifts and blessings from God, and we thank Him for them. But, we all need to realize that this is not just a one-sided deal. We have to love God and seek His righteousness so that we can please Him. Not everything is convenient, but if we work with God, we can find comfort in Him. God has kept His promise for those who obey and keep His Word. He is the true God, and when you love Him and put His Words in your heart, then He will provide you with what you need and want:
“For, as come down doth the shower, And the snow from the heavens, And thither returneth not, But hath watered the earth, And hath caused it to yield, and to spring up, And hath given seed to the sower, and bread to the eater, so is My Word that goeth out of My mouth, It turneth not back unto Me empty, But hath done that which I desired, And prosperously effected that for which I sent it” (Isaiah 55:10-11).
And please note, not every dream is from God, but God does use dreams to confirm us that He is still in this world, even during hard times. Dreams are gifts from God, too.
